Background Information: As a result of Public Chapter 202 of 2011, LEAs now have the statutory authority to contract with third party employers to provide substitute teachers. TSBA's old model policy and the Board’s current policy mirrored the prior law by stating that substitutes had to be employed and paid by the local board of education. This revised policy indicates that LEAs may employ substitutes or contract with others to provide these services. Although we do not have any third party providers of substitute teachers, I feel it is important to keep our policies up-to-date. The Board’s policy has not been updated since February 2, 2004. To keep the policy up-to-date, I recommend the attached policy. The highlighted words indicate additions to the current policy, while the struck-through language indicates deletions from current policy.
Staff Recommendation: I recommend approval of the above-noted amendment to Board Policy #5.701 – Substitute Teachers, on second and final reading. |
